A valid driver’s license issued by the State where the applicant resides and insurability as defined in UTS 157 may be required to perform the position's essential functions.Purpose of Position
Under minimal supervision and with extensive latitude for the use of independent judgment, designs, plans, implements, and manages of complex high-capacity administrative and research network infrastructures in support of data, voice, video, and wireless network services. Provides leadership in daily operations, design and support of future research networks initiatives, product evaluation, testing, and troubleshooting. Responsible for maintaining the new high speed/capacity Wide Area Networks as well as analyzing and evaluating new technologies, network protocols, and tools used to optimize the campus infrastructure. Interacts and coordinates with other teams within the department for a variety of telecommunication projects is required. May lead projects and working groups in support of the university's research initiatives requiring network-intensive resources.
Essential Functions
Performs analysis of network needs and spearhead the design and deployment of network architectures upgrades to meet the growing demand of networking services.
Configure networks to ensure smooth and reliable operations for fulfilling business objectives and processes.
Monitors network performance and troubleshoot problem areas as needed.
Collaborates with executive management and department leaders to assess near- and long-term network needs.
Creates and maintains documentation as it relates to network change management, network mapping, processes, and service records.
Develops, implements and maintains policies, procedures, and associated training plans for network administration, usage, and disaster recovery.
Conducts research on network products, services, protocols, and standards to remain abreast of developments in the networking industry.
Practices network asset management, including maintenance of network component inventory and related documentation and technical specifications information.
Provides network performance statistics and reports.
Oversees new and existing equipment, hardware, and software upgrades.
Participates in managing all network security solutions.
Performs or assists with periodic network security audits.
Interacts and negotiates with vendors, outsourcers, and contractors to evaluate and recommend network products and services.
Complies with all State and University policies.
Other duties may be assigned.

Required Qualifications:
Education: Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or field related to network technologies and infrastructures.
and
Experience: Five years of related experience and training to the statement of duties and responsibilities; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Traveling is required. Extensive and applied experience required in various advanced networking concepts such as, but not limited to:
Designing, implementing, operating and troubleshooting complex data networks in a service provider environment.
OSPF and BGP design, implementation, and troubleshooting procedures
Configuration and deployment of multicast networks
Setting up of peering relationships
Implementation of QoS, IPv4, and IPv6 protocols and services.
Network management and monitoring tools and functions such as tcpdump, ethereal, ntop, netflow accounting, iptables, ACLs, and others management tools.
Experience with various Network Layer 1, Layer 2 and Layer3 technologies to include Firewalls, IDS/IPS appliances, access control devices, etc. as needed to enhance robustness and security of the enterprise network.
Networking certifications include current CCNA, CCNP, or equivalent certifications in various network technologies (Juniper, Enterasys, etc.)
