College/Department Information
The Medical College of Georgia (MCG) is one of the nation's largest medical schools by class size, with 304 students per class. The MCG educational experience is anchored by the main campus in Augusta, with regional clinical campuses for third- and fourth-year students across the state, and two four-year campuses located in Athens (in partnership with the University of Georgia) and in Savannah (in partnership with Georgia Southern University). MCG's expanding partnerships with physicians and hospitals across Georgia currently provide more than 350 sites where students can experience the full spectrum of medicine, from complex care hospitals to small-town solo practices. MCG and its teaching hospitals also provide postgraduate education to approximately 575 residents and fellows in 50 different Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-approved programs. Our researchers and clinicians focus on what most impacts the health of Georgia's and America's children and adults, including cardiovascular biology and disease, cancer, neurosciences and behavioral sciences, public and preventive health, regenerative and reparative medicine, personalized medicine and genomics. Our physician faculty also share their expertise with physicians and patients at about 100 clinics and hospitals statewide.
Job Summary
The Patient Educator is responsible for educating patients regarding disease/treatment and promotion of adherence to treatment while building rapport with the patient population of the Ryan White Program. This position works/coordinates with the appropriate departmental contact to provide potential community counseling/testing for patients and to identify issues/solutions. Additionally, this position helps with patient visit preparation, patient check-in/check-out, while performing accurate and complete patient registration. This position is vital to data management and quality improvement projects of the grant and program.
Responsibilities
The responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Provide Education
Responsible for educating patients regarding disease/treatment and promotion of adherence to treatment. This position works/coordinates with the appropriate departmental contact to provide community counseling/testing for patients and to identify issues/solutions. Provide treatment counseling and education to patients, families, and caregivers about the disease/treatment. Explain treatment regimens and assess how to tailor to patient's lifestyle while reducing barriers to care.
Administrative Duties
Utilizes proper patient identification. Ensures all demographic and insurance information is obtained and correct. Sends query for insurance eligibility to validate and accurately document eligibility and benefits. Informs patients of in/out of network status. Payment & Reimbursement: Collects all payments due. Accurately schedules patient follow-up appointments at check-out that best fit the patient's schedule in coordination of availability. Performs other duties to ensure reimbursement is received for appointments/services. Patient Information: Obtains all necessary patient demographics, insurance, and financial information for provider services rendered. Scheduling: Must adhere to physician/departmental scheduling protocols, as supported by hospital and clinic systems, to accurately schedule patients for appointments. Utilizes the appropriate clinician or manager for advice when unclear. Follows scripting, as necessary. Discusses problems/confidential information only in appropriate settings and with the appropriate personnel; Keeps any confidential documents secure and out of public view.
Represents AU/ AUMC
Represents MCG and the specific department at community events.
Provides Accurate and Timely Documentation
Provides accurate and timely documentation to ensure compliance with reporting requirements for medical and administrative review.
Other:
Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein including: Participate in quality assurance agenda items to meet programmatic federal guidelines. Help with data management activities.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Social Work, Psychology, or related discipline and experience in community outreach, health care, research and/or social services.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with HIV/AIDS patients.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Detail-oriented.
Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases.
Shift/Salary/Benefits
Shift: Days/M-F (work outside of normal business hours will likely be required of an employee in an exempt level position)
Pay Band: B8
Salary: $45,400/annually
Salary to be commensurate with qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum-midpoint) of the position
