Qualifications:
Socio-Cultural Aspects of Kinesiology (KINES 578) is a seminar-style course designed to focus on sport as part of the social and cultural world in which we live. The emphasis is on sports and sport-related actions as they influence and are influenced by the social and cultural contexts in which they are created and played. Historical events are introduced to understand how they have influenced sport in our present society.
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: Critically analyze and evaluate sport related issues using sociological theories; Discuss the historical factors that affect sport related issues; Discuss specific socio-cultural factors that influence sport related issues; Read and apply research related to the study of sport in society; Integrate relevant information from readings and class discussions to evaluate critical issues in sport and formulate positive strategies for reform; Demonstrate the ability to positively participate in professional discussions focused on contemporary issues in sport.
This course will be taught in person on the Moraga campus during the 2025 Fall term on Tuesdays from 6:00 - 9:00 pm.
In addition to teaching, the instructor is expected to hold regular office hours (a minimum of one hour per week) in order to provide students with support outside of the classroom.
The successful candidate will hold a terminal degree in Kinesiology or a closely related field and have a recent publication record in the field, or a Master's degree in Kinesiology or a closely related field and have at least five years of current, relevant professional experience. Demonstrated teaching effectiveness at the graduate level as evidenced by recent course evaluations is strongly preferred as is the ability to teach a course in a hybrid format. Candidates should be comfortable supporting and working in a multi-cultural environment. Preference will be given to those who have taught the course, or KINES 378.
Candidates must reside in California.
The salary range for this position is $7,447 - 10,308 (3 units) and is covered by the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the College and SEIU, Local 1021, available here.
