Summary

The Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine is seeking full-time faculty for the position of Advanced Practice Provider (APP) with a focus on comprehensive orthopedic care. McNair, the private clinic of Baylor College of Medicine, is the primary site for this position. This position offers unique experience for individuals who wish to pursue a career in orthopedic surgery and musculoskeletal medicine. The successful candidate will collaborate with our team of subspecialists to deliver evidence-based care spanning all orthopedic services including trauma, joint replacement, sports medicine, hand and upper extremity, foot and ankle, and bone health.

Job Duties

  • Responsible for Performing comprehensive and problem focused history and physical exams, interpret and correlate laboratory and diagnostic procedures. Interpret and correlate subjective and objective data to formulate a differential diagnosis and establish a working diagnosis. Formulate a treatment plan for Orthopedic problems within scope of practice. Implement therapeutic intervention for specific conditions when appropriate. Exercise judgment on problems requiring consultation, referral, or evaluation by the supervising Orthopedic surgeon or other health care professionals.
  • Order, collect, and perform appropriate laboratory or diagnostic procedures, and studies including but not limited to blood and tissue specimens. Ordering or performing diagnostic studies such as but not limited to EMG, electrocardiogram, compartment pressure measurements, and x-ray examinations including special x-ray examinations CT, MRI, and bone scans etc.
  • Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including but not limited to joint and bursa aspirations, closed reduction of fractures and dislocations, injections of joints, tendons, trigger points and bursa, as well as brace, cast and splint applications.
  • Order, prescribe, dispense, and administer Medication, orthosis, orthotics, braces and other Orthopedic devices as may be allowed by state legislation.
  • Evaluate, screen and council patient on health maintenance and promote utilization of community resources. Design, conduct and/or participate in research studies, manage databases, and perform quality assurance.
  • Responsible for assisting orthopedic surgeons in the clinic setting, conducting new and existing patient orthopedic examinations, developing treatment plans, adjusting and prescribing medications, performing in-clinic procedures, conducting pre-operative assessments, and explaining the surgical procedure to the patient.
  • Responsible for running independent joint injection clinic multiple times a week.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education Required: Master’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies. NOTE: Bachelor's degree in Physician Assistant Studies accepted based on terminal degree requirements at time of graduation.
    Nurse Practitioner: Master's degree in in Nursing.

Certification/Licenses/Registration:

  • Current license as a Physician Assistant by the State of Texas Physician Assistant Board. Specialty certification as required by department. Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
    Nurse Practitioner: Current license as a Registered Nurse (RN) by the State of Texas Board of Nursing. Current Texas Licensure as an Advanced Practice Nurse (APRN-NP), and specialty certification as required by department.
